The latest chapter in my organized hockey career is an interesting one to say the least.  After the Hometown Phone Book screwed me and the rest of our team over, and the Metro East Moose hadn't returned to Way To Play, I returned to Oak Hill to play for my brother Greg's team...we'll call them, The Cobras...even though they went by a much cruder name.  We played at Oak Hill until they shut their doors, essentially ending indoor roller hockey in the Belleville, IL area.

After some time, I decided to put another team together, but this time over in St. Louis at the All-American Sports Mall.  This would pretty much be Greg's old Cobras team with a couple changes.  We called ourselves, Snakes on a Plane, named after the internet sensation that came about because of the hype surrounding the movie by the same name.

Our team got off to a rough start as we lost our first game, but we finished the season playing better than anyone in the league and we finished 2nd overall with a record of 7-3.  Our goalie, Jeff Price, was playing at the top of his game...we felt like we were going to win the championship.  But when I was called and informed of the playoff schedule, the lady on the phone told me the wrong day.  I was told the playoffs were actually a week later than they actually were.  So when we showed up for the playoffs, we found the building essentially empty as the playoffs had already been played the week before.  This also happened to another team in our league...so of the four teams that made the playoffs, two of the teams were told the wrong day and missed the playoffs.  Needless to say, our team was livid.  We demanded compensation of some form...but the asshats at All-American were being douchebags and didn't want to give us anything except an apology.  So screw 'em...we never went back.

The day we showed up for the playoffs, Team Missouri was getting ready to practice.  They asked if we wanted to scrimmage...so we did.  A pissed off Snakes on a Plane team beat Team Missouri in that scrimmage, so as far as I'm concerned, we would have won the championship had we been told the correct day.  So there you have it, the Snakes on a Plane roller hockey club are the 2005 Summer Champions at All-American.

There is/was an online blog called, Snakes on a Blog.  Early in our season I had posted a message on the blog about our team being called Snakes on a Plane, how we had a website and all that jazz.  A few days later, I was contacted by David Waldon.  He was authoring a book called:  Snakes on a Plane: The Guide to the Internet Ssssssensation.  It was to compile a lot of the Snakes on a Plane pop culture stuff that was happening online.  He had seen my post and asked if our team wanted to be in the book.  I thought that sounded like a cool idea, so I agreed.  I sent him a bunch of photos of our team in action to use.  And a few guys on the team along with myself put together some commentary on the Snakes on a Plane sensation, the movie, our team, etc.  We got something like a six-page spread in the book.  It was hilarious.  He sent me an advanced copy of the book, along with the final version when it actually came out.  Everything turned out great, except they spelled Luke Naliborski's name wrong...but let's get real, can you blame them?

You can still buy the book on Amazon.com.
